Job Description

Position Overview: The Construction Assistant supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley by building or repairing Habitat projects using a variety of construction trade skills. This role operates within a small team (2–3 workers including self) and collaborates with volunteers to meet scheduled project goals. The Construction Assistant is expected to continuously improve personal building skills, mentor others, and maintain a job site that is safe, clean, and well-organized.

Essential Functions:
  • Complete assigned demolition, carpentry, painting, and other labor tasks efficiently and on-time.
  • Monitor jobsite daily for health/safety compliance, loss prevention, and cleanliness/order.
  • Facilitate volunteer and team participation to ensure a productive, safe, and meaningful experience.
  • Represent Habitat professionally with residents and neighbors through clear communication about project plans and expectations.
  • Ensure timely completion of all required safety training courses.

Core Functions:

  • Participate in daily team huddles and construction meetings to receive assignments and report progress.
  • Engage in mentoring and training provided by team members to build construction skills and competency.
  • Accurately track and submit personal and volunteer time logs.

Other Duties:

  • Support and maintain positive team morale and commitment to Habitat's mission.
  • Ensure punctuality, preparedness, and professionalism on all job sites.
  • Contribute to on-time project completions and positive volunteer/homeowner interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience constructing, installing, repairing, and maintaining wooden structures, including proper installation and sealing of residential windows. Demonstrates strong attention to detail, precision, and a solid understanding of building codes and safety practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to learn, mentor others, and engage volunteers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in construction, carpentry, or skilled trades preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier loads with assistance.
  • Perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, squat, and reach.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Manual dexterity and physical stamina necessary to perform construction tasks.
